Johor marine police bust counterfeit liquor syndicate thanks to tip off

JOHOR BARU: A tip-off has led the Marine Police Region II to discover a syndicate found to be making and distributing liquor believed to be counterfeit.

Johor deputy police chief Deputy Comm M. Kumar said based upon information, a team of Marine Police Region II personnel carried out a raid at a premises in Skudai at around 10.30pm on Sunday (July 9).

“It is believed that the premises had been turned into a storage and processing centre for counterfeit liquor,” he said in a statement here Tuesday (July 11).

DCP Kumar added that marine police arrested a 35-year-old local man at the scene as well as seizing boxes that were filled with counterfeit liquor.

He also said that the team also seized tools that were used to process the liquor with the total seizure valued at about RM241,000.

“The suspect, who works as a transporter, is under remand until July 24 to assist with the ongoing investigation,” he said adding that the syndicate is believed to have been operating less than a month prior to the raid.

DCP Kumar urged the public not to buy and consume counterfeit liquor and immediately inform the authorities if they come across it.

He said the police would always carry out operations to curb such illegal activities from taking place here.
