Supervisor charged with assaulting convenience store worker

BANGI: A 32-year-old man who allegedly assaulted a 7-Eleven employee in Semenyih, Selangor, has claimed trial at a Magistrate's Court here to a charge of voluntarily causing grievous hurt.

Construction site supervisor Divagaran Uthaya Sooriyam pleaded not guilty to the charge before Magistrate Nordiyanah Mohd Nawawi here on Tuesday (June 27).

He is accused of assaulting the staff member at 7-Eleven Ecohill Taipan at 5am on June 20 under Section 325 of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of up to seven years or a fine, or both, upon conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor Siti Nur Liyana Mohd Sulaiman offered bail at RM8,000.

However, Divagaran's lawyer Vickneswari Veerasamy appealed to the magistrate to lower the bail to its minimum as he said his client is an only child who is taking care of his parents' healthcare.

Nordiyanah fixed bail at RM4,500 and Aug 15 for mention of the case.

On June 20, CCTV footage of the victim being attacked by a man went viral on social media.

A video of the suspect allegedly seen in a selfie smiling in front of the camera next to the bloodied victim also went viral.
