GEORGE TOWN: The 28-year-old driver who was involved in a road accident that killed a woman motorcyclist in Tanjung Bungah has claimed trial to a charge of reckless driving.
Oo Cheng Sing, pleaded not guilty to the charge of driving recklessly, which resulted in the death of the 59-year-old woman in Jalan Loh Poh Heng at about 11.20am on May 8.
He is charged under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which if found guilty can be jailed for a maximum of 10 years and fined not more than RM50,000, in addition to being disqualified from holding or obtaining a driver's licence for five years.
Magistrate Nur Melati Diana Abdul Wahab granted RM10,000 bail with one surety but during mitigation, Oo's lawyer Zainal Akram Zainal Azahar requested for the amount to be lowered.

"The accused is single. He is working as a part-time music teacher and earning RM2,000 monthly.
"He has a permanent address in Gurney Drive and is already on police bail, in addition to having attended proceedings without fail," he said.
Nur Melati then lowered the bail amount to RM3,000 with one surety before setting July 26 for submission of documents.
Ooi was accompanied by his father at the courthouse on Wednesday (June 21).
Both of them, including Oo's mother, had earlier claimed trial to another charge for rioting in a public place following the accident.
On May 12, police arrested six individuals allegedly involved in a scuffle following the accident.
A viral video showed a car crashing into a motorcyclist, with both the victim and the car then crashing into the pavement along a housing area.
A fight occurred at the same location, possibly minutes after the accident, with several people seen scuffling while others tried to break up the fight.
Police said those involved in the fight were family members of the motorcyclist and the car driver.
The female motorcyclist sustained severe head injuries and died at the scene.
