Cops: 8.6 tonnes of drugs worth RM229mil taken off the streets

KUALA LUMPUR: Some RM229mil worth of drugs have been seized in various operations nationwide this year.

Bukit Aman Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (NCID) seized various drugs weighing a total of 8.6 tonnes, 1,559l of liquefied drugs, 38 tonnes of ketum leaves and 18 ganja trees between January and May this year.

"We detained 77,121 individuals for various drug-related offences, including 3,407 hard-core drug addicts and five chemists.

"We also busted 154 syndicates and seven drug labs," the NCID said on its official Facebook page on Saturday (June 3).

A total of 238 civil servants were also among those detained for various drug offences, the NCID said.

"Four were detained under the Dangerous Drugs (Special Preventive Measures) Act 1985.

A total of 31,180 investigation papers (IP) were opened, of which 28,807 have been prosecuted, the NCID said.

"Assets worth RM44mil belonging to syndicates have also been seized.

"We urge those with information on drug-related offences to contact the NCID hotline at 012-208 7222," said the police.
