Metal thieves hit Perak Stadium again, RM78,000 worth of lighting components stolen

IPOH: Floodlight components and cables have been stolen from Perak Stadium again, less than three months after the last incident.

Ipoh mayor Datuk Rumaizi Baharin said the theft was discovered on May 11.

“We estimated the loss to be around RM78,000. A police report has been lodged and the case is now under investigation.

“The items stolen contain valuable copper and we believe this is what attracted the thieves," he told reporters here on Tuesday (May 30).

On Feb 24, the Ipoh City Council (MBI) confirmed that RM135,000 worth of floodlight components and cables were stolen from the stadium.

On May 12, the Facebook page of "TBG Super Fan" posted a claim that another theft had occurred.

Rumaizi said MBI would tighten security at the stadium's storage rooms.

“There are four storage rooms used for the floodlights and cables. We have allocated about RM50,000 to tighten security.

“This includes adding 17 surveillance cameras, with 12 of them located within the rooms themselves, as well as alarm systems.

“It will take us about four weeks to get it done... the work has already started,” he said, adding that the trees apparently used by the thieves to climb into the stadium had been cut down.

The Star has reached out to Perak police chief Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri for comment.
