Man dies in fire, brother escapes unscathed

RAWANG: A mentally-challenged man who was living with his elder brother died after the house they were staying in caught fire at Taman Desa Country Homes here.

According to Selangor Fire and Rescue Department deputy director Wan Md Razali Wan Ismail, the incident occurred at around 6.30am yesterday.

“Two fire engines and 13 personnel members from the Batu Arang and Rawang fire stations were dispatched to the scene.

“They arrived at 6.36am and found that a fire had occurred on the ground floor of the two-storey terrace house, but it had been put out by members of the public before the Fire and Rescue Department personnel team arrived at the scene,” he said when contacted.

He said initial checks revealed that a 65-year-old man was living in the house with his mentally-challenged younger brother.

“We found the charred body of the 56-year-old mentally disabled man in one of the downstairs rooms of the house,” he said, adding that the elder brother escaped without injury.

Wan Md Razali said the cause of the fire was currently being investigated and the extent of the damage was being determined.

“The body has been handed over to the police for further action,” he said.
