Doctrine of constitutional monarchy, parliamentary democracy 'anchor' for stable govt, says Sultan Nazrin

KUALA LUMPUR: An understanding of the doctrine of constitutional monarchy and parliamentary democracy can be an ‘anchor’ in creating a stable government, says Sultan of Perak Sultan Nazrin Shah.

Sultan Nazrin said it could also help create a government with a transparent and an excellent governance culture, thereby gaining the people’s confidence, acceptance and support.

"The doctrine of constitutional monarchy and parliamentary democracy contains a noble spirit that needs to be understood. If understood and practised, the doctrine will create a government system that balances and complements one another.”

Sultan Nazrin said this when launching the book "Kedaulatan Malaysia: Governan Utama Negara” written by law lecturer of the International Islamic University of Malaysia’s International Institute of Islamic Thought and Civilisation, Associate Prof Datuk Dr Wan Ahmad Fauzi Wan Husain, here on Saturday (May 27).

His Highness said the book was published to expound the meaning of sovereignty in the legal realm and explain the position of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and the Malay Rulers as pillars of the country’s sovereignty.

According to Sultan Nazrin, the constitutional monarchy is capable and willing to fulfil its responsibilities by playing the check and balance role.

"With their wisdom, the Malay Rulers can fulfil a complementary role to help strengthen the government formed based on the parliamentary democracy system.

"For the well-being of the people and the prosperity of the country, the monarchy and the legislative, executive and judiciary branches must cooperate and complement one another and fulfil the check and balance role to develop a sovereign Malaysian nation that practises outstanding governance,” he said.- Bernama
