Johor Customs Dept seize RM400,000 worth of untaxed liquor

JOHOR BARU: The Johor Customs Department has confiscated untaxed liquor worth close to RM400,000 during a raid on a premise at Gelang Patah, Iskandar Puteri.

The department director Misbahudin Parmin said based on a tip-off, the department was led to the premises inside the Gelang Patah Industrial Area at 10.30am on April 17.

"Inspection inside the premise then found five carts that contained 7,242 bottles and cans of beer and liquor believed to be untaxed.

"The premises have been abandoned and are believed to have been used as a store. The liquor and beers are worth around RM397,000," he said.

He said this during a press conference at Menara Kastam Johor, here, on Monday (May 22).

Misbahudin also informed that the department was currently looking for the premise owner to help with the investigation.

The case was being investigated under Section 135(1)(d) of the Custom Act 1967 for smuggling untaxed goods, which carries a fine of not less than 10 times the value of the goods or RM100,000, whichever was higher.

Meanwhile, in an unrelated case, Misbahudin added that a 48-year-old man was arrested for making a false declaration on the K8 Custom Form to avoid paying tax worth RM37,902.

"Based on a tip-off, we managed to confiscate a container on May 5 at 9.15pm at the Pasir Gudang Industrial Area,” he said.

Misbahudin added that an inspection of the container found toilet bowls worth RM88,145 that were declared as sanitary ware, which is different from what has been declared on the K8 Custom Form.

"The container was also supposed to be sent to the Public Licenced Warehouse (GBA) in Nilai, Negri Sembilan, but was sent to Pasir Gudang instead," he said.

The case is being investigated under Section 135(1)(c) of the Customs Act 1967 for transporting untaxed goods, which carries a fine of not less than 10 times the value of the goods or RM100,000, whichever is higher.
