Tragic end: Firemen pulling up the man’s body from the sewer hole.

KOTA KINABALU: The body of a man was found in a car that had fallen into a gigantic sewer hole in Sabah’s east coast Sandakan district yesterday.

It was believed the victim, in his 40s, had driven the car into the open hole filled with some five feet of water, located on the roadside at Bandar Letat.

A Fire and Rescue Department spokesman stated that they were alerted to the incident at around 7.30am.

The spokesman said a team was rushed to the area and they later, together with the Public Works Department, had to pump out the water from the hole to make it easier to retrieve the victim trapped in the car.

“The victim was confirmed to have died by a medical team from the Health Ministry at the location,” he added in a statement.

In a separate incident, a pedestrian and motorcyclist were reported to have been killed following a collision at Jalan UMS, near Kampung Rampayan near here yesterday.

It was learned both victims died at the scene following the incident at 8.30am.

It was also learned that a grandchild of the 54-year-old pedestrian and the wife of the motorcyclist, aged 42, were injured in the accident.
