Over 1,200 accidents, 112 deaths involving food delivery riders since 2018

KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 1,242 accidents involving food delivery riders were recorded from 2018 until May last year, says the Transport Minister.

Anthony Loke said that out of the total accidents, 112 of them died, 82 had severe injuries and 1,048 sustained light injuries.

"112 of the food delivery riders died on the road. This is a big number - heart-breaking and upsetting.

"That’s why the government is looking into regulating p-hailing service providers," he said in response to Datuk Awang Hashim (PN-Pendang) during the tabling the Land Public Transport (Amendments) Bill 2023.

Awang had earlier said that the government should make it compulsory for p-hailing riders to do Social Security Organisation (Socso) contributions.

"Make it compulsory for the gig workers to contribute to Socso as they are exposed to risks at work," he said.

Last June, The Malaysian P-Hailing Riders Association (Persatuan Penghantar P-Hailing Malaysia) said that an average of three to four road accidents are reported a week involving p-hailing riders in the country due to fatigue.
