Immigration Dept site 'down for maintenance' after possible cyber attack

PETALING JAYA: The Immigration Department’s website is currently down as of 11am on Tuesday (April 4).

Checks on the department's official link - imi.gov.my - also found that users were unable to access the website despite clicking the link.

The Immigration Department through various social media posts meanwhile said its portal is temporarily under maintenance.

However, searches on various search engines show that the usual link to the Immigration Department’s website bears the wording “Hacked By CaptainSmok3r”.

This has led to speculation among social media users that the website has been hacked.

In mid-May 2022, a data leak was reported by local tech portal Amanz, where a 160GB-sized database with personal details of 22 million Malaysians belonging to the National Registration Department was being sold for US$10,000 (RM43,950) on the dark web.
