Fleeing man in viral video not illegal racer, say Perak cops

IPOH: A man in a viral video thought to be running away from police merely panicked upon seeing the patrol unit's high-powered motorcycles, it is learnt.

Ipoh OCPD Asst Comm Yahaya Hassan said the man was just an onlooker and not an illegal racer.

"Police arrived at the scene at Jalan Jelapang on Sunday (April 2) at about 3am for an operation against illegal motorcycle racers.

"The man saw the big bikes, panicked and ran off," he said in a statement on Monday (April 3).

"The operation was conducted following complaints from people in the area," he said.

According to ACP Yahaya, police detected a 38sec video on Twitter, shared by a user named Nan Mankoi18715, on Monday.

"We urge the people not to speculate on the video (and) cause anxiety among the public," he added.

On the operation, ACP Yahaya said 49 summonses for various traffic offences were issued.

"The police will continue to combat illegal racing in the city, as these activities endanger road users," he said.
