Anwar's 'running man' shot sets meme crafters' imaginations racing

PETALING JAYA: An "action shot" of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim dashing into the Dewan Rakyat was too good to resist for creative social media users, who immediately went to work creating memes.

First, photos of the Tambun MP running to be on time for Prime Minister's Question Time on Tuesday (March 28) made the rounds on various platforms.

The images inspired numerous memes, with social news sites like Cillisos compiling them for readers' enjoyment.

One shows Anwar running to catch a RapidKL bus while another has him running in a Ramadan bazaar with the caption "When berbuka (breaking of fast) is in five minutes and you're still at the bazaar."

Another tongue-in-cheek meme has him running inside a public washroom away from his former protege Datuk Seri Azmin Ali, who is cleaning the floor with a squeegee.

Azmin's portion of that meme is believed to be from 2021, when he was international trade and industry minister, and photographed cleaning the wet floor of Masjidil Haram after heavy rain.

(That image itself inspired numerous memes back then.)

Another one has Anwar on a football field dribbling past (now retired) Welsh footballer Gareth Bale.

The Prime Minister's pursuit pose also made its way into reimagined movie scenes and posters, from Avengers: Infinity War alongside the Hulk and Black Widow among other superheroes, to being the intended prey of the T-rex from Jurassic Park.

Another has him in the Catch Me If You Can poster with a member of his security detail following close behind.

Besides poking fun at the Prime Minister's dash across the Parliament lobby, users commented that it was refreshing to have a leader who made punctuality a priority.

"This is a Prime Minister who prioritises the country and the people and not his position. A Prime Minister must become a good example to the people," commented Bahari Pagek under a series of photos showing Anwar in the Dewan Rakyat, published on Facebook by Bernama.

"Yesterday he was in a neighbouring country, today he is in Parliament. Alhamdulillah (Praise be to God), he's still spirited even though it is the fasting month," wrote Siti Salwa, referring to Anwar's one-day trip to Cambodia on Monday (March 27).

Abu Rizqi commented: "Solid, PMX. May you be given health and strength to manage the country."
