Lorry driver injured in eight-vehicle pile-up in Sandakan

KOTA KINABALU: A lorry driver was injured in an eight-vehicle pileup at Mile 30 Jalan Labuk in Sandakan district.

Other motorists miraculously escaped without any serious injuries although they were shaken in the accident that occurred at about 4.25pm on Tuesday (March 14).

They include a bus ferrying 29 passengers.

It is learnt that a three-tonne lorry crashed into one of the vehicles, triggering a domino effect with vehicles crashing into each other.

According to a state Fire and Rescue Services Department spokesman, the driver of the 1.5-tonne lorry was trapped inside his vehicle but was taken out by the public.

The victim was rushed to the Duchess of Kent hospital in an ambulance.

Apart from the two lorries and a bus, the other five vehicles involved were two cars and three pickup trucks.

Police were at the scene carrying out investigations into the accident that caused massive jams along roads connected to the main road linking Sabah's east coast towns.
