Umno polls: Former Youth chief Asyraf congratulates Dr Akmal as unofficial result show unassailable lead

KUALA LUMPUR: Former Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki has congratulated his successor Dr Akmal Saleh.

In a Facebook post, Asyraf said unofficial results showed that Dr Akmal had won the post for the 2023/2026 term.

Asyraf said that as of 9.40pm Saturday (March 11), unofficial results showed that Akmal had obtained 102 votes from 191 divisions.

However, official results shown at the party headquarters showed that Akmal had received 36 votes.

Three other candidates had contested for the Umno Youth chief position - former deputy finance minister Datuk Mohd Shahar Abdullah, who was also Paya Besar MP; Umno supreme council member Datuk Armand Azha Abu Hanifah; and Meor Hassan Mat Ali.

The official results would be announced by election committee chairman Tan Sri Shahrir Abdul Samad once all votes were tallied and tabulated.

Umno elections are being held from Feb 1 to March 18, with the branch-level elections being held from Feb 1 to 26, followed by the elections for the Wanita, Youth and Puteri wings at the national level on March 11.

The Umno divisional delegates’ meetings and committee elections, as well as contests for seats in the Umno supreme council, would be held simultaneously nationwide on March 18.
