KULAI: The Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services (Maqis) Department has seized 25 boxes from Indonesia filled with live worms at Senai International Airport here.

In a statement, Johor Maqis said the 332kg consignment worth RM10,300 was confiscated at the airport cargo complex at around 3pm on Wednesday (March 8).

“Inspection by enforcement officers found 25 boxes filled with live worms.

“Further checks found the importer failed to submit a valid Maqis permit as stated in the import conditions,” it said on Thursday (March 9).

The importer was also detained for further action, it added.

According to the statement, importing any type of agricultural produce without a Maqis import permit is an offence under Section 11(1) of the Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services Act 2011.

“Maqis is committed to carrying out enforcement at all entry points to ensure the safety of agricultural products entering the country.

“This is to comply with the conditions and regulations set by the government to ensure that the country's food biosecurity is always under control,” Maqis added.
