Snatch thief pretending to be food delivery rider, accomplice arrested

PETALING JAYA: A snatch thief had been riding around in the guise of a food delivery rider, snatching mobile phones and bags.

Petaling Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Mohamad Fakhrudin Abdul Hamid said police were initially alerted after a man lodged a police report that his mobile phone was snatched while he was walking near Plaza 33 here on Feb 21.

"The 25-year-old victim claimed the incident occurred at around 10am.

"He also claimed the suspect was riding a Honda motorcycle and was carrying a food delivery bag," ACP Mohamad Fakhrudin told reporters at the Petaling Jaya police headquarters on Wednesday (March 8).

He said based on intelligence received, police conducted a raid at a housing area along Jalan Gasing Indah and arrested a 25-year-old man at around 6.30pm on Feb 22.

"During interrogations, the suspect confessed to his involvement in the case and told police he sold the mobile phone to an accomplice.

"About two hours later, we arrested a 32-year-old man at Kampung Pantai Dalam, Kuala Lumpur and seized an iPhone believed to be the stolen phone," he said, adding that checks revealed the main suspect had a prior record for robbery and vehicle theft while the second suspect had a record for drug related offences.

He said police have linked at least two cases to these suspects.

"We do believe that there are other victims out who have yet to lodge police reports. Our checks revealed the main suspect had stolen a food delivery bag and t-shirt. He would use the bag and clothing during the snatch thefts in order to avoid detection," he said.
