ARAU: The Jerami Icon, which showcases a sculpture of an owl made from rice straws, is one of the main attractions of Pesta Angin Timur Perlis 2023.

The artwork, created using rice straw rolls provided by Muda Agricultural Development Authority (Mada), was well received by visitors to the carnival held in Kampung Sungai Padang from Friday until today.

Mada Perlis Region 1 officer, Mohamad Hafifi Syauki Md Saad, told Bernama that the owl sculpture, which is 4.57m-tall and 2.4m-wide, was named “Burhan’, an abbreviation for burung hantu (owl).

He said they used 89 rolls of straw to “fence up” the area which contained a small hut and other straw sculptures. The creation resembled personnel from the Road Transport Department (JPJ) manning roadblocks, he added.

He shared that the straw sculptures were created by six government agencies in Perlis, including Arau Community College, state JPJ and forestry departments, which participated in the sculpture competition.

“We provided each government agency with five compartments of straws to make their own sculptures,” he added.
