Budget 2023: RM4,000 income tax relief to help children with learning disabilities

KUALA LUMPUR: The government is expanding income tax relief to ease financial commitments on early intervention for children with learning disabilities.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, while tabling Budget 2023, said that the scope of income tax relief for medical expenses would be expanded to include the intervention expenditure for autism, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Global Developmental Delay (GDD), intellectual disability, Down Syndrome and specific learning disabilities.

"The expenses would be limited to RM4,000 for diagnostic assessment certified by a medical practitioner registered with the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC), as well as early intervention and rehabilitation programmes conducted by health profession practitioners registered under the Allied Health Profession Act 2016," he said.

He said that with the expansion of this scope, the amount of tax relief for medical treatment expenditure is increased from RM8,000 to RM10,000, effective from the year of assessment 2023.
