KUALA LUMPUR: Each of the 7,648 body cameras that will be fitted on police personnel is estimated to cost between RM2,000 and RM2,500 , the Dewan Rakyat was told.

According to Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, RM30mil was allocated for the acquisition of Body Worn Camera (BWC) which will be fitted on officers across 157 district police headquarters nationwide.

“The BWC will be used by police officers stationed in the field, particularly the police patrol car units and the police motorcycle patrol units, as well as road patrols by the police in 157 district police headquarters nationwide.

“7,648 BWCs are planned to be acquired at an estimated price between RM2,000 to RM2,500 per unit,” said Saifuddin in a written reply dated Tuesday (Feb 21).

However, Saifuddin did not give a date as to when the new policy would be implemented.

The allocation of RM30mil was approved in 2021 under the 12th Malaysian Plan.

Saifuddin also said the Independent Police Conduct Commission (IPCC) Act will be enforced beginning July 1.

“For now, the ministry is waiting for position approvals and allocations from the central agency for the establishment of this commission,” said Saifuddin.

The IPCC Act was passed in the Dewan Rakyat in July of last year and it will see the setting-up of an independent commission to monitor the integrity of the police force and probe complaints of misconduct involving police personnel.

Saifuddin was responding to Lim Lip Eng (PH-Kepong) who asked about the setting up of the IPCC and the breakdown of body cams that will be fitted on police officers.
