Elderly woman goes missing while looking for cockles at mangrove area

KOTA KINABALU: An elderly woman went missing while foraging for cockles at a mangrove area at Kg Betutai Tuaran near here on Sunday (Feb 19).

The woman was with her family prior to the incident, and it is learnt that they had walked in different directions to find cockles.

However, it is believed that she had strayed too far into the mangrove area and could not find her way later in the evening.

Tuaran Fire and Rescue station chief Mohd Abd Qawie Abdul Gapar said they received a call about the missing woman at 7.23pm.

“Our rescue team is still at the scene searching for the woman, and full details of this matter are still being gathered,” he said when contacted.

He said the telecommunication signals there were weak and it was hard to contact their men on the ground for now.

“We will update details later once our rescue team has come out of the area,” said Qawie.
