Zahid: ROS will allow Umno’s no contest motion

KUALA LUMPUR: Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi says Umno is confident that the Registrar of Societies (ROS) will approve the additional motion passed at the 2022 Umno general assembly for the party’s presidency and deputy presidency to be uncontested at this year’s party polls.

He added that he was confident that the party had fully complied with all the stipulated meeting regulations in line with the party’s constitution as he had also fully briefed ROS on the party’s decision.

“I am confident that all Umno’s meeting regulations and party constitution have been fully adhered to. Clauses 9.3 and 9.4 of the party constitution have also been explained to the ROS,” he told reporters at the Parliament Media Centre yesterday.

He added that Umno was given 60 days to give a detailed explanation to the ROS.

“I am confident that we will receive a positive response even before the end of the 60-day period from the ROS,” he said.

Senior Umno representatives met the ROS on Jan 31 and provided an explanation on the passing of the no-contest motion for the posts.

The meeting was set following the move by two Umno members who, on Jan 20, had lodged complaints with the ROS to review the additional motion on no-contest for the top two posts approved during the general assembly.

On the party polls, Ahmad Zahid said Umno has started to receive the nomination applications from members who want to contest in the polls.

“There are those who have expressed intention to contest, based on social media postings, but have yet to register.

“Doors are open for anyone to contest the contested posts. I just hope all candidates will adhere to the campaign guidelines issued by the Umno election committee chairman Tan Sri Shahrir Samad,” he said.

The Umno election will take place from Feb 1 to March 18.
