Serdang Hospital did its best, says Health Dept

PETALING JAYA: Responding to allegations of negligence from the next of kin of a patient who died due to delays in admission, the Selangor Health Department says Hospital Serdang’s emergency and cardiology department did its best to treat the patient.

Selangor Health Department director Datuk Indera Dr Sha’ari Ngadiman said upon investigation, it found that the 64-year-old patient had been given the necessary treatment at the emergency department and was referred to the cardiology department for further treatment.

“He was placed at the emergency department but under the surveillance of the cardiology department before being transferred to the cardiology ward following the availability of a bed,” he said in a statement yesterday.

He added that treatment, surveillance and screening were conducted at the cardiology department.

“The patient and the family were briefed by the medical officer who was treating the patient,” he said.

“The patient was scheduled to undergo a heart procedure, but his health condition did not permit the procedure to be conducted.”

Dr Sha’ari said the patient’s condition deteriorated on the same day the procedure was supposed to have been conducted.

“The cardiology team tried its best to resuscitate the patient but he could not be saved,” he added.

He said the hospital had done its duty to provide healthcare services to the best of its ability despite the high patient volume.

“The hospital will contact the family members for a conference in relation to the late patient’s case,” he added, while extending his condolences to the family.

Dr Sha’ari was responding to a tweet by Samuel Manokaran who said his father had died due to negligence.

“My father passed away my friends last night due to the negligence of Hospital Serdang medical staff,” he tweeted on Jan 26.

Samuel said his father, who was being treated for a heart attack, had to wait 17 hours for a bed.
