Tough cookie: Chen is spending Chinese New Year in Melaka this year.
TAIWANESE singer Ella Chen, who is spending the Chinese New Year in Melaka, impressed Internet users by opening a durian by herself, reported Sin Chew Daily.
The 41-year-old, who is married to Malaysian Alvin Lai, uploaded a video of herself cutting into a durian with a cleaver and then prying it open with her hands.
“Must eat durian whenever we come back to Malaysia. Whoever wants durian must open it themselves,” she wrote on Facebook.
Many Malaysians were impressed by the singer’s skills and welcomed her back to the country.
It was earlier reported that Chen, who is part of the all-girl trio S.H.E., was forced to spend Chinese New Year in Taiwan for the past few years due to Covid-19 restrictions.
Before the pandemic, she would often spend it in Melaka with Lai’s family.
Chen married Lai in 2012 and they had a baby in 2017.
It was also reported that several other celebrities, including Taiwanese actor Darren Wang and actress Joe Chen, were spending Chinese New Year in Malaysia with their significant others.
Wang is in a relationship with actress-singer Joey Chua while Joe is married to Alan Chen.

The siblings, who are from China’s Jiangsu province, sued their father after several failed attempts to get the money that their father claimed to have kept for them.
A local court ruled that ang pows given during the Chinese New Year are legally considered “gifts” and should be the twins’ property.
It ruled that the father is to repay all 16,800 yuan (RM10,613) he has held since 2020 to the twins within 15 days.
When the news came to light, many Internet users criticised the father’s behaviour.
“How broke is the father to take away their children’s ang pow money?” one netizen wrote.
In past years, there have been cases of children taking their parents to court over ang pow money.
