Umno assembly gives the nod to no-contest motion, Zahid, Tok Mat to remain party's top two

KUALA LUMPUR: The Umno general assembly has given the nod to a motion for the posts of president and deputy president not to be contested at the coming party polls.

The motion was passed at around 4.55pm Saturday (Jan 14).

This means that Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan will remain as Umno president and deputy president respectively for another term.

At a press conference, Terengganu Umno chief Datuk Seri Ahmad Said said 90% of the delegates supported the motion.

"The main reason is to ensure that Umno can focus on its preparations for the upcoming state elections," he said.

He said that if the contest were to be held, it would have led to further division within Umno.
