Man charged with possessing a knife in public


SIBU: A 42-year-old man was charged in court on Friday (Dec 30) with possessing a knife in public.

No plea was recorded from the accused, Ling Pick Teck, who is facing a charge under Section 6(1) of the Corrosives and Explosive Substance and Offensive Weapon Act 1958.

The section provides for an imprisonment term of five years and not exceeding 10 years, and shall also be liable to whipping.

Subordinate Court Sibu assistant registrar Romme Ahmad Zaidi also ordered the accused to be remanded until Jan 9 for next mention.

The accused was arrested at 9pm in Jalan Bukit Assek on Dec 28 after a video clip began circulating on social media, showing him riding a motorcycle and waving a knife at people along Jalan Pulau.

The police seized a knife and a motorcycle from him.
