KOTA KINABALU: Security and rescue forces have once again reminded coastal villagers and anyone planning activities at sea, including fishing, to beware of current weather conditions.
They are also advised to bring along safety equipment such as personal locator devices and life jackets when going out to sea.
This comes after several drownings and boat capsizes in Sabah waters over the past week.
State Fire and Rescue Department assistant director of operations Misran Bisara said the current weather conditions of rain, strong winds and high waves were especially dangerous to small boats.
He said personal locator devices made it easier for rescuers to locate those in distress.
He also advised them to check the weather forecast before heading to sea.
“If there is no urgent matter, it is best to put all sea activities including fishing on hold for now,” he said.
On Dec 16, four anglers escaped tragedy when their fishing vessel capsized in waters off Mengalum island near here.
On Dec 17, a boy drowned and two others were rescued during a swimming trip in Kuala Penyu district.
On Monday (Dec 19), three men were rescued, with one in critical condition, after their boats capsized off Kudat.
Malaysia Maritime Enforcement Agency director for Sabah and Labuan First Admiral Datuk Mohd Rosli Abdullah had earlier urged maritime communities to be on high alert during this monsoon season.
He said according to the Malaysian Meteorological Department, the monsoon season is expected to go on until March.
“This situation will see high tide and strong, choppy waves at sea. Various areas in Sabah are also expected to experience slightly more rainfall this season,” he said.
He reminded the public to ensure that their boats are seaworthy before heading out, to always wear life jackets, and bring along personal locator devices.
They can contact the MERS number at 999 or the Sabah and Labuan MMEA hotline at 088- 387774 for assistance during emergencies, he added.
