Lawyer arrested over land sale scam in Negri

TAMPIN: Police have detained a 42-year-old lawyer for allegedly being involved in a land sale scam.

District police chief Supt Anuwal Ab Wahab said the suspect was arrested yesterday (Dec 15).

He said the scam was discovered after a man lodged a report claiming that he had been cheated.

"The victim claimed that he lost RM927,340 after signing a sales and purchase agreement to buy 24.8 acres of land in the Tg Kling sub-district in Rembau.

"He only realised that he had been cheated after his lawyer told him that an individual claiming to be the real owner of the property said he never authorised anyone to sell it," he said.

Supt Anuwal said based on investigations, the suspect had admitted being involved in the cheating case.

Investigations, he said, were ongoing.

The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating which carries a jail term of between one and 10 years, whipping and a fine upon conviction.
