‘MCA prepared for opposition role’

KUALA LUMPUR: MCA will continue to prioritise the people’s interests even as an opposition, says party president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.

He said the party respected the people’s decision in the 15th General Election, adding that Barisan Nasional was no longer favoured to form the government as it had lost the people’s mandate.

“Therefore, MCA is prepared to perform our role as the opposition,” he told a press conference at Wisma MCA here yesterday, where he thanked the supporters who stood alongside the party all these years.

Dr Wee also made it clear that MCA would not side with Pakatan Harapan or Perikatan Nasional to form the Federal Government, even as the two parties were still involved in negotiations to find a way out of the impasse.

“I wish them luck,” he said, adding that the Barisan Nasional supreme council had decided that the coalition would play the role of opposition. He said the rejection of Barisan in the polls was a demonstration of a healthy and mature democratic process.

“Barisan is left with 30 seats. We accepted the reality and respected the people’s decision in GE15,” he added.

Asked if Barisan would sign a Confidence and Supply Agreement, Dr Wee said it was too early to talk about this matter.

Also present at the press conference were the party’s top leadership, including deputy president Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon, secretary-general Datuk Chong Sin Woon and Youth chairman Datuk Nicole Wong.
