ALOR GAJAH: A family trip to celebrate a 71-year-old Felda settler's birthday at a resort in Langkawi turned tragic when the celebrant and three of his family members were killed in an accident at a junction along Jalan Kolam Machap here.
One child from the family is now fighting for his life at the Melaka Hospital due to a severe head injury sustained in the mishap at 7.45am on Sunday (Nov 13).
Alor Gajah OCPD Supt Arshad Abu identified the victims as Ibrahim Daud from Felda Bukit Senggeh Nyalas in Asahan and his 66-year-old wife Latipah Dorahim.
He said the others killed were Ibrahim's daughter-in-law Syazana Tharin, 30 and five-year-old grandson Yusuf Daniel Muhammad Izwan.
"The other grandson is now in serious condition and has been identified as Aniq Fahim Muhammad Izwan. We have yet to obtain the child's age as the father who survived the crash is too distraught to talk," he said on Sunday (Nov 13).
Supt Arshad said the family of six were travelling in a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) when a four-wheel-drive suddenly came out from a junction at the stretch.
He said the 59-year-old driver of the other vehicle escaped with minor injuries and was detained to assist in an investigation under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 at 11am on the same day.
Supt Arshad said the MPV driven by Ibrahim's 30-year-old son attempted to avoid the crash by braking instantly but unfortunately couldn't avoid the collision.
He said from the preliminary investigation, the family was on their way to celebrate Ibrahim's birthday on Sunday (Nov 13) in Langkawi.
