YONG PENG: Gaining more Chinese votes in the 15th General Election (GE15) is an important task for MCA, says its president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong (pic).

Other than meeting voters in his Ayer Hitam parliamentary constituency, he said he would be making trips to other areas nationwide in support of MCA candidates and to canvass for votes.

“Earlier, I met Malay and Indian voters who expressed their support for me.

“I also hope to gain more Chinese support as that will be the biggest boost for us.

“Malaysia is a multi-racial country and having all-round support is crucial,” he said in his address at a dinner event organised by the Yong Peng Vegetable Farmers’ Association here yesterday.

Dr Wee said he expected to face two Malay opponents in Ayer Hitam in GE15, and pledged to continue working hard for the people’s support.

He also thanked the locals for their strong support since he first became Ayer Hitam MP in 2004.

Dr Wee is expected to face Johor DAP vice-chairman and former Paloh assemblyman Sheikh Umar Bagharib Ali and Perikatan Nasional’s Muhammad Syafiq A. Aziz.

Meanwhile, MCA secretary-general Datuk Chong Sin Woon confirmed that the party would be contesting the parliamentary seat of Kepong, while MIC would contest the Batu seat.

“This was accomplished through Barisan Nasional’s spirit of consultation and mutual understanding,” he said in a statement.

Chong noted that the total number of parliamentary seats MCA would contest in GE15 remained unchanged at 44.

“The MCA hopes that voters will grant Barisan-MCA an opportunity in this general election to bring afresh change to Kepong, and along with it development and progress,” he added.
