Sabah environmental NGO announces wish list ahead of GE15

KOTA KINABALU: State-based NGO, Sabah Environmental Protection Association (SEPA), has released its wish list ahead of GE15 of things the government should look into.

This includes improving development-related law enforcement and dialogue with the community to mitigate impacts.

In the statement on Thursday (Nov 3), the NGO listed four items that they urged the future government of the day take into account.

"We call upon government leaders to embrace the following; to enhance the enforcement of law/regulations related to all the developments which adversely impact climate change and the environment.

"Also to conduct dialogue with affected communities, update the public and allocate resources to mitigate impacts.

"For example on flash floods in all the areas in Sabah, on the proposed Papar Dam, Tanjung Aru Eco Development (TAED), Tawau gold mine, Pitas shrimp farm, Kudat silica mining and clean coal plant," said SEPA.

The association also called for measures to create public awareness on the law and regulations pertaining to waste management namely e-waste, kitchen waste and rubbish handling.

"We also call on them to have the environmental agenda in (their) manifesto," added SEPA.
