GE15: Syed Saddiq to defend Muar seat for Muda

MUAR: Muda president Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman (pic) will be defending the Muar parliamentary seat in the 15th General Election (GE15).

Party deputy president Amira Aisya Abd Aziz put all speculations to rest by making the announcement at a hotel here on Wednesday (Nov 2).

Amira Aisya, who is also the party’s election director, said the former youth and sports minister was the best man for the job to defend the parliamentary seat.

“Muar is a must-win mission for Muda.

“We want not only a winnable candidate, but one that is accepted by the locals, and one that can also work for the people,” she said.

In his speech, Syed Saddiq said when he was 25, the people of Muar gave him a chance to provide his services to the constituency in 2018.

“Though I went on to be a minister during the Pakatan Harapan government for 22 months, I never once failed to return to Muar and assist the people here.

“With a humble heart, I am here again to ask the people of Muar to ‘renew my contract’ and be the voice of the people in Parliament,” he said.

He beat Barisan Nasional’s Datuk Seri Razali Ibrahim and Abdul Aziz Talib from PAS in the 14th General Election (GE14).

He received 22,341 votes compared with Razali’s 15,388, and Abdul Aziz lost his deposit after collecting 4,354 votes.

Back then, Syed Saddiq contested the parliamentary seat under the Pakatan ticket where he was Bersatu Youth chief.

He is set to contest against Barisan’s candidate Mohd Helmy Abd Latif and PAS’ Abdullah Husin for the seat in GE15.

Muda has so far announced its candidates for four seats - Kota Marudu, Tanjung Piai, Tanjong Karang and Kepala Batas.

Johor has 26 parliamentary seats.

Nomination Day is set for Nov 5 and Malaysians will cast their votes on Nov 19.
