139 rescued from ferry that ran aground near Kuala Kedah


KUALA KEDAH: The Marine Department together with the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) rescued 139 passengers, including six infants, from a ferry that ran aground near Kuala Kedah.

The Marine Department first received an emergency report regarding the incident at 4.16pm on Friday (Oct 28).

Following the report, the Department together with the MMEA organised a rescue operation to extract the passengers and crew from the stricken ferry.

According to the press release, the ferry was 0.954 nautical miles North-East from the Kuala Kedah Passenger Jetty Terminal when its main engine failed, stranding its passengers.

At 6.21pm, the Department reported that all passengers had been rescued and had been brought safely back to the Kuala Kedah Passenger Jetty Terminal.

The Marine Department said that it would set up an investigation team to study the incident to ensure a similar event could be avoided in the future.

It also praised cooperation it received from the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA), fishermen, tugboat operators and the public around Kuala Kedah that aided in the rescue.
