GE15: Kuching South mayor laughs off talk he will contest Bandar Kuching seat for GPS

KUCHING: Kuching South mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng (pic) has laughed off talk that he is in the running to contest the Bandar Kuching parliamentary seat under Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS).

He said he was not among the three potential candidates named by the Kuching, Pending and Batu Lintang branches of the Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP), a component party of GPS.

"My name is not there," he told reporters when met after the launch of the AirAsia Ride ehailing service here on Thursday (Oct 27).

According to a local media report, SUPP's potential candidates are Kho Teck Wan, Sih Hua Tong and Eric Tay.

Kho, the SUPP Women's chief, lost to DAP's Kelvin Yii in 2018, while Sih contested unsuccessfully in three previous state elections in the Batu Lintang seat and Tay is a new face.

DAP has named Yii as its candidate to defend Bandar Kuching while GPS has yet to reveal any of its candidates.

Wee was fielded by SUPP in Padungan in last December's state election but lost in a four-cornered fight to DAP's Chong Chieng Jen.

Padungan is one of two state seats in Bandar Kuching.

Meanwhile, Wee said GPS component parties should unite in support of the coalition's candidates once they are announced.

"Make sure that GPS will win," he said.
