GE15: Azwan Ali to decide next week whether to contest against Azmin in Gombak

PETALING JAYA: Controversial celebrity Azwan Ali says that he will decide whether to contest against his brother Datuk Seri Azmin Ali in the Gombak parliamentary seat next week.

He said that he had received countless messages from his fans, asking him to contest in Gombak.

"Let's wait for the announcement next week," he said, when contacted on Thursday (Oct 20).

Azmin won the Gombak parliamentary seat on a PKR ticket at GE14, beating the other candidates from Umno and PAS.

At the time, Gombak had 141,112 registered voters, 85.4% of whom turned out to vote.

The majority - 75.8% - were Malays while Indians represented 10.77% and the Chinese, 10.67%.

However, Azmin had jumped together with several other PKR MPs to join Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu), in a move dubbed as the 'Sheraton Move'.

Pressed whether he would be contesting under any parties, Azwan replied that he would stand as an independent candidate.

"As you know, I have contested as an independent using the elephant logo during the 14th general election for the state seat Bukit Antarabangsa.

"If I contest in the GE15, I will still use the elephant logo," he explained.

Azwan said that his brother shouldn't feel too comfortable as he would do his best to win in the GE15.

Azmin had previously said that he was prepared to take on any challengers including Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim or any family members.

The Election Commission (EC) announced earlier Thursday that polling for GE15 would be on Nov 19, with nominations on Nov 5 and early voting on Nov 15.
