GE15: Warisan names Bongawan rep as candidate for Kimanis parliamentary seat

KOTA KINABALU: Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal has chosen Parti Warisan’s second candidate for the upcoming polls, naming Bongawan assemblyman Dr Daud Yusof as the party’s pick to contest the south-western Kimanis parliamentary seat.

The Warisan president spent close to an hour delivering his speech during the launch of the party’s Kimanis election machinery in Bongawan on Saturday (Oct 15) before dropping Daud’s name.

“As the party president, today I announce Dr Daud as our candidate for Kimanis,” he said, to loud cheers and applause from the crowd.

Daud, 61, a veterinarian by profession, is a two-term Bongawan assemblyman, having successfully defended the seat in the 2020 Sabah snap election.

He was also previously the state agriculture and food industry assistant minister when Warisan spearheaded the state administration.

The incumbent MP for Kimanis is Barisan Nasional’s Datuk Mohamad Alamin who won the seat after defeating Warisan’s Datuk Karim Bujang in a by-election in January 2020.

Mohamad won with a 2,029 majority for the parliamentary seat, garnering 12,706 votes in a straight fight against Karim who obtained 10,677 votes.

Former foreign minister Datuk Seri Anifah Aman, who is former Sabah chief minister Tan Sri Musa Aman’s younger brother, had successfully defended Kimanis in the 14th General Election.

Anifah had won the seat with a 156-vote majority, securing 11,942 votes against Karim’s 11,786 votes while another candidate, Jaafar Ismail of Parti Harapan Rakyat Sabah, had obtained 1,300 votes.

However, the by-election was called after the Kimanis seat was declared vacant after the Federal Court on Dec 2, 2019 upheld the Election Court’s ruling, nullifying Anifah’s victory in GE14 in May 2018.

Shafie had on Friday (Oct 14) named former Sabah Muslim Lawyers Association president Datuk Adnan Puteh as its candidate for Sipitang, becoming the first party in Sabah to name a candidate for GE15.

He said Adnan, 64, was likely to face off, among others, the incumbent Datuk Yamani Hafez Musa of Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia, a son of Musa.
