Woman nabbed after GOF officer reports bribe attempt in Mataking Island

KOTA KINABALU: A woman has been arrested after she tried to bribe a general operations force (GOF) officer when she was found with controlled goods she intended to take to the Philippines.

The suspect, in her 50s, is believed to have offered RM800 to the GOF officer stationed at Mataking Island.

Sabah Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) director Datuk S. Karunanithy said the woman was arrested at its office in Tawau at 5.40pm on Tuesday (Oct 11) after recording her statement.

"No remand was obtained for the suspect and she was freed the same day on RM2,000 bail with one surety," he said in a statement, Wednesday (Oct 12), adding that investigations were ongoing.

Karunanithy said GOF and the MACC were united in their fight against corruption.

He reminded the public that offering or bribing any civil officer – especially those in security forces – was an offence under the MACC Act 2099.

He also urged civil servants to lodge reports with the MACC if they know of similar incidents.
