Budget 2023: Focus on improving agriculture sector, increase productivity, says Johor exco rep

GELANG PATAH: The coming Budget 2023 should focus on improving and increasing the productivity of the agriculture sector, says Johor exco member Datuk Zahari Sarip (pic).

The state Agriculture, Agro-Based Industry and Rural Development Committee chairman added that he also hoped that Johor will be given a larger allocation in line with its status as the food basket of the country.

“Johor is the biggest agriculture product producer in the country in terms of plantations, fisheries, and livestock.

“We have also been given the task of being the country’s food bank, so we hope that the federal government will give the state 'extra attention' when it comes down to the allocation given,” he said.

He said this when met after visiting an ikan siakap (barramunidi) fish farm and fish release in the Tebrau Straits, near Pendas Laut, here.

The pandemic has also given birth to more agriculture businesses, which means more allocation is needed to streamline production and ensure a win-win situation for the farmers and industries involved, he said.

“One thing that the pandemic has taught us is that despite being locked in our houses, we still need food on the table, so this has prompted more agriculture businesses to be opened or shifted into the state,” he added.
