Cops arrest married couple, three others in anti-drugs operation

JOHOR BARU: A married couple were among five drug syndicate members arrested in a special anti-drugs operation here last Friday (Sept 23) at around 9pm.

Johor police chief Comm Datuk Kamarul Zaman Mamat said the five were detained during Ops Khas - a joint operation between the Bukit Aman Narcotics Crime Investigation Department and Johor police.

"The suspects were arrested in four different locations in Gelang Patah, Ulu Tiram and Seri Alam," Comm Kamarul said in a press conference at the Johor police contingent headquarters here on Monday (Sept 26).

He said the 23-year old local man and the 22-year old local woman were masterminds of the syndicate while the other three suspects aged between 22 and 32 acted as their runners.

"The syndicate has been operating since March and were using a double-storey terrace house in a gated, guarded precinct as their base," said Comm Kamarul.

He said police seized 21,16 grammes of ganja worth RM52,915 and 784 grammes of syabu valued at RN14,112 in the raid.

Comm Kamarul added that the seized drugs could feed about 21,322 drug addicts in the market.

Police also seized RM30,650 cash, gold jewellery worth RM44,413, two cars and three motorcycles valued at RM113,000.

"The total value of the items seized during the operation is RM255,090," he added.

Comm Kamarul said three suspects were tested positive for drugs and they have previous drugs-related and criminal records.

He said all suspects have been remanded from Sept 24 until Sept 30 to assist in the investigation under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

Similarly, Comm Kamarul said 19,556 individuals were arrested for drug-related offences from January until Sept 24, 2022 with 2.72 tonnes of seized drugs worth RM12.26mil.
