Cops seize RM60,780 worth of illicit cigarettes


MUAR: A 58-year-old man was arrested for being involved in smuggling contraband cigarettes worth RM60,780.

Muar OCPD Asst Comm Raiz Mukhliz Azman Aziz said police raided a house in Jalan Bakariah here and found 155,200 sticks of illicit cigarettes stashed in several boxes at around noon on Monday (Sept 19).

“The suspect was about to enter the house when we conducted the raid and he led us to the 797 cartons of contraband items.

“The tax for the illicit cigarettes is valued at RM108,510 and we also seized a car at the house,” he said in a statement.

He said the case was being investigated under Section 135 (1) of the Customs Act 1967.

The offence is punishable with a fine of not less than 10 times the value of the seized items or RM100,000, or whichever amount is higher, and not more than 20 times the seized value or RM500,000, or whichever amount is higher, or six month to five years imprisonment, or both upon conviction.
