Hiker leaps from tree to escape bees and breaks his leg in Kota Belud

Firemen bringing the injured man to the ambulance.

KOTA KINABALU: A man broke his leg after falling from a tree in Kota Belud district on Sunday (Sept 18) evening.

The 52-year-old identified as Herman Ijun had jumped off the tree and fell 10m down a hill when he realised there was a wild beehive on the branch he was sitting on.

Kota Belud Fire Station chief Muhammad Syazwan Latun said the man was also stung by some bees before he managed to jump.

"That jump caused him to break his left leg," he said when contacted.

Muhammad said Herman was hiking prior to that, and had stopped to climb the tree at Jalan Pompod to rest and watch the view from above.

He said after the incident, the Fire Department received a distress call at around 3.34pm.

"Our rescuers used a stretcher and ropes to get the victim up the hill before he was handed over to medical officials on the scene to get preliminary treatment," he said.

Muhammad said the victim is in stable condition. Operations ceased at 5.17pm, he added.
