UTP Performing Arts Group.

COME and be part of a unique showcase when Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS (DFP) and Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP) present a concert themed Junjung Tradisi – A night with UTP stars on Sept 24 at 8:30pm.

This is the first-ever cultural performance concert that will be held at DFP this year.

This concert will continue to affirm DFP’s objective of becoming the premier iconic hall with diverse music and cultural offerings to create a unique experience for all.

This special one-night-only showcase will witness a spectacular performance that incorporates gamelan Melayu, traditional Malay songs and contemporary gamelan tunes, complemented by the beautiful traditional Malay dances and unique vocals of the talented performing arts organisations from UTP namely the UTP Performing Arts Group (UPAG), the gamelan group Sanggar Kirana, and the traditional musicians of UTP Petra Group on the DFP stage.

At UTP, students are given ample opportunities to develop their leadership skills and creative talents through cultural activities and performing arts. This is in line with UTP’s mission in producing well-rounded graduates who are excellent and innovative in various academic and non-academic fields.

Come and enjoy this spectacular event highlighting the beauty of traditional Malay performing arts passed down from generation to generation.

Among the performance that will be featured in the concert are Joget Gamelan Topeng, Zapin Madah Pusaka, Joget Selayang Pandang, and music of Inang Godampol, Keroncong: Kasih, Isang, Madah Teruna, and Antara Selat.

Since 2002, UPAG has vigorously promoted and showcased various Malaysian arts and dances through lively and colourful performances. Consisting of 30 students of different races pursuing various academic disciplines, UPAG’s ambition is to be a catalyst to inspire an appreciation of Malaysia’s art, culture and heritage.

UPAG has been the champion of Festival of Colours of the World (FESCO) for four years since 2008. They represented Malaysia for Cheonan World Dance Festival in Korea in 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2018 and 2021 and successfully won various awards including first place and the Best Team for Street Parade and Best Costume Award category.

First established in February 2002, Sanggar Kirana still stands firm to this day as a place where music and passion are engineered with the aim of promoting and preserving the traditional arts while instilling and inspiring students into loving the national heritage.

Sanggar Kirana has been involved in various performances and events all around the world including Malaysia Night in London as well as Taste of Malaysian Culture in Nottingham, United Kingdom (2015), Gamelan Festival in Solo Indonesia (2018), and Festival Gamelan Istana Budaya (FesGIB) in 2019.

Petra is a newly established group led by Zaidin Mohd Nor, aiming to preserve traditional Malay culture through music like Asli, Inang, Joget, Zapin, Ghazal and Keroncong using traditional and modern musical instruments. Their first ever debut was at UTP’s 14th convocation ceremony back in 2014 and has been performing for the event annually. The group has won second place in Istanbul International Chorus and Folk Music Festival in 2015 in Folk Instrument category.
