JB cops nab eight for road offences

JOHOR BARU: Eight people have been arrested for road offences in special operations around the city centre here ahead of the National Day 2022 celebrations.

Johor Baru South OCPD Asst Comm Raub Selamat said the suspects were arrested during Ops Mabuk and Ops Samseng Jalanan which were carried out between 10pm on Tuesday (Aug 30) and 4am on Wednesday (Aug 31).

"Six men were arrested during Ops Samseng Jalanan for performing dangerous stunts on the road that could have posed a danger to other road users.

"Two men were arrested for driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol during Ops Mabuk. All the suspects are aged between 17 and 30," he said in a statement.

Police also seized 11 motorcycles and issued 32 summonses for various offences, he added.

ACP Raub said the Ops Samseng Jalanan cases were being investigated under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless driving, which carries a fine of between RM5,000 and RM15,000 and a jail term not exceeding five years upon conviction.

The two alleged DUI offences were being probed under Section 45A(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 (Amendment 2020) for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, which carries a fine of between RM10,000 and RM30,000 and up to two years in jail if found guilty.

In addition, convicted offenders stand to be barred from holding or obtaining a driving licence for a period of not less than two years after completing their sentence.
