Penang DAP shortlisting GE15 candidates

GEORGE TOWN: The DAP is considering fielding many new faces in the next general election, with Penang Island City Council members, businessmen, lawyers and party faithful among the potential ones.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, who is the Penang DAP chief and national vice-chairman, said interviews were underway for 30 potential new candidates.

He said the interviews began yesterday and will go on over the next three to four days.

“These are new names nominated by the various branches. They do not include the incumbents, who will be interviewed at a later date,” he told a press conference at his office here yesterday.

Chow said the interviews were being conducted by a panel of five, which included him and other Penang DAP committee members.

He said there were various criteria to be weighed, such as political experience, educational background, service record, fresh ideas and language proficiency.

Asked about the distribution of seats among Pakatan Harapan parties in the state, Chow said the matter will be discussed soon.

He said the Pakatan leadership left it to the various state party leaders to come to a consensus on seat allocation among them.

“It is only if the state fails to reach an agreement, that the national leadership will make the decision,” he added.
