Cops nab babysitter over death of four-month-old baby in Ampang

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have arrested a 26-year-old babysitter to help with investigations into the death of a four-month-old baby.

Ampang Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Mohamad Farouk Eshak said a medical officer from Hospital Ampang lodged a report after the baby boy was brought in dead to the hospital at 6.30pm on Thursday (Aug 18).

"Emergency treatment was administered but signs showed that the victim had been dead for a while. The exact cause of death is still under investigation.

"On the same day at 10.30pm, the police arrested the babysitter at the hospital. In her preliminary statement, she claimed that the victim had trouble breathing after a diaper was found on his face while in the cradle," he said in a statement on Friday (Aug 19).

The victim had been under the care of the babysitter at her apartment unit on Jalan Cempaka since June as both parents were working.

"The babysitter had brought the victim to a clinic in Pandan Indah before going to the hospital," he said.

Earlier on Friday morning, the suspect was brought to court to be remanded under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

ACP Mohamad Farouk said the case will be investigated under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, which provides for a jail term not exceeding 10 years or a maximum fine of RM20,000, or both, upon conviction.
