Umno asks MACC to verify authenticity of allegedly leaked investigation papers

PETALING JAYA: Umno has called on the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to verify the authenticity of a leaked document claimed to be its investigation papers related to Court of Appeal judge Datuk Mohd Nazlan Mohd Ghazali.

Umno secretary-general Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan said that the party also urges the Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC) to state if it will be taking further action following the leaked investigation papers.

"The respected integrity of our institutions need to be protected. Umno hopes that the MACC and AGC will clarify the matter to the people in the near future," he said in a statement posted on his Twitter account on Thursday (Aug 18).

Ahmad pointed out that on May 22, the MACC said that it had concluded its probe into Mohd Nazlan and submitted its investigation papers to the AGC on May 18.

On Tuesday (Aug 16), the Federal Court dismissed former premier Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s application to adduce fresh evidence to show that Mohd Nazlan had failed to disclose information about his past relationship with Maybank Group, which amounted to a conflict of interest when presiding over the SRC International Bhd trial in 2019.

The then-High Court judge convicted and sentenced Najib to 12 years in jail and a RM210mil fine for misappropriating RM42mil of SRC International Bhd funds.

Chief Justice Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat said the defence failed to state exactly what the proposed additional evidence would prove or say on the charges brought against him.

“To our mind, there is no miscarriage of justice,” the CJ said.

She said that even without the additional evidence, the defence would still be able to “attack” points of law in the appeal.
