Floods: Penang water corp on alert as Baling hit again


GEORGE TOWN: The Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) is operating on alert levels following reports of floods in Baling, Kedah, and monitoring water turbidity level at the Lahar Tiang Intake at Sungai Muda.

It said in a statement on Friday (July 29) the raw water turbidity level reached 261 nephelometric turbidity units (NTU) as at 11am.

The normal turbidity of raw water from Sungai Muda is below 1,000 NTU and PBAPP said that for the moment, the Sungai Dua Water Treatment Plant is still able to treat raw water from the source.

Earlier this month, the treatment plant had to be shut down when raw water turbidity levels rose to 3,000 after flash floods hit Baling on July 4.

It was reported that floods had struck villages in Baling, Kedah again on Thursday (July 28).

PBAPP aso said it was preparing to initiate emergency response/contingency measures at the treatment plant and would issue an update later.
