Couple nabbed with drugs worth over RM2mil in Ipoh

IPOH: A married couple has been nabbed with more than RM2mil worth of drugs, says Comm Datuk Mior Faridalathrash Wahid.

The Perak police chief said the arrest was made at 4.40pm on July 21.

“We arrested a 34-year-old man and his 38-year-old Vietnamese wife after finding 10 shining green packers in their car with the word 'Guanyingwang' written on them. The packets contained 10.36kg of methamphetamine," said Comm Mior Faridalathrash.

“We arrested the husband at a parking lot at Jalan Raja Musa Mahadi before arresting his wife near Panorama Lapangan Perdana on the same day,” he added at a press conference at the Perak Police Contingent Headquarters on Monday (July 25).

Comm Mior Faridalathrash said the police then went to the suspects’ apartment where they found another 10 packs of drugs.

“At the apartment, we found the same green packs and seized a total of 10.34kg of methamphetamine," he said.

“We also seized a watch and pieces of jewelry estimated to be worth RM83,315,” added Comm Mior Faridalathrash, who said that the drugs are suspected to be distributed locally to about 200,000 drug users.

He added that both suspects have no prior criminal record.

“Based on our initial investigation, we believe that the couple has been operating for about three months. The husband worked at a glass and aluminum shop while his wife is not working,” he said.

The suspects are currently under remand for seven days from July 22 until July 28.

The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Act 1952, which provides the death penalty upon sentencing.

Separately, Comm Mior Faridalahtrash said the police have yet to take the statement of the pick-up truck driver involved in the five deaths in an East-West highway accident on July 23.

“The 53-year-old female driver is still receiving treatment at the Jeli Hospital in Kelantan. We will take her statement once she has recovered,” he said.

On July 23, the accident near Gerik took the lives of five people from a family including a six-year-old girl after the car they were traveling in collided with a pick-up truck.

Initial investigations showed that the driver of the pickup truck had lost control of the vehicle, resulting in it swaying in the opposite direction and crashing into the car.
