Covid-19 Watch: 5,685 new cases, nationwide ICU bed usage at 63.1pc


PETALING JAYA: Malaysia recorded 5,685 new Covid-19 cases on Wednesday (July 20), bringing the total number of cases in the country to 4,635,648 infections since the pandemic began.

The Health Ministry's CovidNow portal reported that 5,683 of Wednesday's new Covid-19 cases were local transmissions while two imported infections were logged.

There were 3,337 recoveries on Wednesday. This brings the cumulative number of recoveries in Malaysia to 4,554,286 since the pandemic began.

The portal also reported that there were 45,484 active cases currently in the country, with 43,858, or 96.4%, observing home quarantine and 39 individuals, or 0.1%, admitted to low-risk quarantine and treatment centres.

The CovidNow portal reported that 1,587 patients, or 3.49% of the total, were currently admitted to hospital for treatment. The number of Covid-19 patients warded at intensive care units (ICU) throughout the country stands at 56, with 35 of these patients requiring ventilation support.

The ICU utilisation rate nationwide stood at 63.1%, with eight states or localities recording ICU usage rates of more than 60%.

Selangor had the highest ICU utilisation rate at 78.1%, followed by Kelantan (74.1%), Kedah (73.4%), Johor (71.2%), Putrajaya (70%), Kuala Lumpur (69.6%), Sabah (67.4%) and Negri Sembilan (65.3%).

Meanwhile, the Health Ministry's GitHub data repository reported that eight Covid-19 deaths were reported on Wednesday including five classified as Brought in Dead.

This brings the death toll to 35,878.
